Liposuction in Virginia and Maryland Liposuction (Suction Assisted Lipectomy)

Liposuction is the most popular and the safest plastic surgery procedure performed in the United States today. It is an excellent method for reshaping body parts with diet and exercise resistant fat deposits. It is a lousy way to lose weight. Liposuction is erformed on an outpatient basis (no overnight hospital stay). It can be done under sedation or general anesthesia. Both are safe. Tumescent fluid is first put into the area to be suctioned using a small cannula (thin small tube) followed by suctioning of the fat. The tumescent fluid helps restore the fluid volume in your body making the procedure safer and allowing for more fat to be removed. It also has an agent in it to shrink blood vessels and thus decrease postoperative bruising as well as an anesthetic that helps to make the area numb after the surgery.

Typical areas in women include the neck, abdomen, inner/outer thighs, hips and upper arms. For men the chest, abdominal area and neck are the most commonly requested areas.

Pain after the surgery is not sharp and feels more like a bruise or soreness of the muscles. Drains are not typically needed, but are used in some cases. A compression garment is worn for 2 to 4 weeks after the procedure to help mold the area and allow the soft tissue to adhere to the underlying muscles.
